Winegrowing notes
The harvest began on September the 1st and finished on October the
14th. Summer was somewhat warmer than usual, which brought forward the
harvesting dates, essentially for the Merlot and Syrah varieties. The
arrival of rain and cool temperatures in September delayed the picking
of the Tempranillo and Cabernet Sauvignon varieties. The vinification
was carried out in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks at 22 to
28°C, with a maceration period of between 15 and 21 days, depending on
the varieties and the winemaking objectives sought for each of them. The
malolactic fermentation took place in tank for all four varieties, at
the end of which the blending was done. The aging time in oak barrels
was 6 months.
Tasting Note
The wine has a medium-deep, clean, cherry-red colour. Faithful to the
style of this brand, it displays a wonderful nose that reveals a
complete palette of fruit aromas, ranging from wild strawberries to
dried peaches, together with notes of scrubland and red liquorice,
against a backdrop of very clean and well integrated oak. First
impression on the palate is fluid, although it gradually gains in
stature, as the fresh berry fruit flavours develop into serious notes of
good oak aging, followed by a long and complex finish.

Bobal, Tempranillo and Syrah
Elaboration
Elaboration
Each variety is vinified separately. Fermentation takes place at a
controlled temperature of less than 25° C followed by a maceration
period of two weeks for the Tempranillo and three weeks for the Syrah.
The cap is punched down (turbo-pigeage) two times per day to ensure gentle extraction and the wine is racked and returned (délestage) twice during maceration at one and two thirds of the fermentation process.
The free-run wine of each variety is then aged in two and three-year old French oak barrels during five months. The blending of both varieties takes place just before bottling.
Tasting Notes
Wine temperature was about 13 ° C. Glass for red wine Spiegelau Authentics 01.
Color and nuance: Bright vibrant cherry red with a brilliant shiny violet rim highlighting the wine’s youth..
Nose : Predominance of red fruit. Soft toasted aromas with subtle balsamic notes.

Flavour of the Wine: Fresh, smooth and intense. Underlined silky sensation of the Syrah and structure of Bobal.
Overall impression : The relatively short crianza/ageing process results in a youthful, meaty and fruity wine that will match very well with blue fish or fatty fish like sardines, fresh anchovies, mackerel, trout, tuna, bonito, salmon and swordfish - fish with strong flavours complementing the structure and body of such a young wine..

Rioja wines (II): Marques de Cáceres Gran Reserva 2001
4:02 AM | Publicado por
vinovalenciano |
Edit Post
Marqués de Cáceres Gran Reserva 2001 wines are produced from vintages as 'excellent' or 'very good'. Depending on the vintage, these fine wines are aged in premium quality oak barrels from central France for 26-28 months, followed by as much as 4 years in bottle. Gran Reservas are, therefore, vinified in such away that their fruit and freshness acquire a unique complexity through ageing.
85% Tempranillo and 15% Graciano & Grenache
The weather conditions, in 2001 vintage, was mild and humid during the autum and winter season until the vines budded in the spring when temperatures were cool with no incidence of frost. Summer began with unusually high temperatures and was rather dry specially during the months of August and September. Some light rain during the last fortnight in September favoured the maturation of the grapes. The harvest took place between 8th and 27th October in very favourable weather conditions allowing us to pick very fine and healthy grapes as these reached perfect maturity.
Taste notes:
Intense, dark cherry-red colour. Complex bouquet that reveals a splendid balance of mature fruit and delicate touch of spice (vanilla, refined leather) from the french oak. Powerful in the mouth with sensations of fleshy, cristallised fruit that highlight a pleasant fullness in which the slightly toasted notes from the wood are perfectly integrated. A very elegant wine that promises to develop splendily in bottle.
An ideal wine to accompany game dishes in sauce or ragout, lamb or beef with spices (roast, stewed or grilled), and mature or blue cheese.
Serve between 16º-18º C.

Rioja wines (I): Torre de Oña 2007
5:48 AM | Publicado por
vinovalenciano |
Edit Post
Torre de Oña is the result of a thorough study carried out in recent
years of the 65 hectares of vineyards in our winery, located in one of
the best and most unique stretches of land in the Rioja Alavesa. As a
result we have dedicated our best plots and grapes to the careful
production of the Reserva, an up to date, innovative and authentic wine,
with a personality distinct from passing fads which, above all, seeks
the best from a privileged estate.
The vegetative cycle and maturation took place slowly, allowing us to
perform a slow and selective harvest collecting extremely high quality
grapes, thanks also to very moderate yields. Manual harvesting was
carried out, plot by plot, collecting grapes based on the maturity of
each vine, thereby ensuring that most of the grapes entered the winery
at their optimum point of maturity, with excellent health and a good
balance between acidity and polyphenols, ideal characteristics for must
with a strong aromatic expression.
Composition and origin: Tempranillo with a small percentage of
Mazuelo (5 %), from our vineyards located in Altos Vallecilla, Calvo and
Camino de la Iglesia plots, beside the winery.
Production and ageing: The grapes were collected in boxes and taken to the winery on
refrigerated platforms where they remained until they reached 4°C. They
were, then, destemmed, crushed and poured into stainless steel tanks
where they remained for about 3 days at under 12°C, to achieve cold
maceration and primary fermentation bolstering their characteristics.
Alcoholic fermentation occurred over 15 days at a set temperature of 27
°C. 51% of the coupage of this wine underwent malolactic fermentation in
new French and American oak barrels, with weekly battonage for the
duration of the process (46 days). The rest of the wine underwent
malolactic fermentation in stainless steel tanks for 34 days, with the
movement of lees every 15 days.
The wine underwent 21 months of ageing in barrels made of French oak
(68.8%), Caucasian oak (20.8%) with the rest made of American oak.
During this period it was decanted three times using the traditional
method from barrel to barrel, with the final coupage in February 2010.

Les Useres, the wines of Castellón
5:25 PM | Publicado por

Edit Post
In the month of April my first visit to a winery in the province of Castellón (see post), geographical location for 500 years lived in part of growing grapes and making wine, but after the plague of phylloxera was eroding and to cultivation and 80's almost became extinct last century the cultivation and processing of vines and wines.

Knew through the website of the Geographical Indication Vins de la Terra de Castelló, most wineries formed the association of wineries, and some other that not being in it, winemaking in these areas.
Today we went to visit one of these, perhaps the oldest in the area, and the surprise is that we have found two more, a newly established, in which we have found different wines and very attached to the 'terroir' with what the day has made us very helpful even though we had a couple of hours of storm.
Bodega Les Useres is a Agrarian Society in the municipality located in the village of Les Useres, near the neighboring town of Vall d'Alba, which was founded around the year 1,960, this winery is comprised of nearly a hundred partners who provide some 600,000 kg of grapes, mostly Tempranillo and Macabeo and recovering native and the Bonicaire to make rosé.

Today we found the cellar in full harvest, there were unloading hopper tractors with Tempranillo's grape as it is the only reception of grapes from the winery. This goes to the stemmer that sends the grape pumped to tanks of 50,000 liters. Stainless steel and temperature control, which then macerated to pass to the trulli or underground tanks where it ferments. We have seen the fermentation of Macabeo and is quite spectacular, as in the photo will observe.
The majority of their wines are in bulk, but bottled is taking way and we can find some varieties such as Tempranillo and a 'coupage' of it with Cabernet Sauvignon that have gone through oak, rosé Bonicaire or white Macabeo varietal or blended with Chardonnay and ready for purchase at standard 75 cl bottle. with cork.
The most range wine cellar is a wine aged in a 12 months, in medium toasted American oak, 70% Tempranillo varieties and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine has a cherry red color is very bright and very expressive nose recalling ripe red fruits like cherries in the mouth has a long and very fresh and fruity, is round and soft palate.

After this visit we went to dinner at La Barona, where we tasted a dish typical of the area, then visit two wineries that throughout this week I will be documenting in future post.Sunday, July 4, 2010
Heiner Sauer, German wines and also Utiel Requena
5:04 AM | Publicado por
vinovalenciano |
Edit Post
Heiner Sauer, German winemaker, created a winery in 1987 the Pfalz, the German Palatinate in the Rhine valley, an area near the border with France. The German tradition of cultivation of white grapes and one of the best areas for growing Riesling and Gewurtztraminer varieties and varieties incorporating 'Burgunder' make this winery produces wines from its 17 ha. following the German tradition of more than 1000 years old.
Harvesting is done by hand with various types of selection, always seeking the highest quality grapes. The winemaking is achieved with modern techniques to extract the maximum exponent in aromas and flavors, but with the traditional view of time and quiet to give the wine to develop gradually.
In Utiel-Requena, Heiner Sauer bought some land in order to produce red wines with Mediterranean character, because in Germany it was very difficult to get acclimatized varieties, its climate and soil types. Bodegas Palmera In particular, the name of the winery on Spanish soil, has 14 ha, south-facing south-west, in the municipality of Utiel, where we can find a fabulous and old strains of almost 50 years Tempranillo, Bobal, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, planted recently.
Here are vinified red wines with character, taking advantage of soil and climatic differences between day and night, at a height close to 700 mts. and less than 100 km from the Mediterranean. Klaus Lauerbach, the winemaker is responsible for controlling the vineyard and the production of these wines, combining these varieties for wine as special as L'Angelet D'or, a Red Guard wine with 20 months in French oak barrels and a grape rigorous selection on process and only when exceptional vintages occur.
L'Angelet, Capricho and Viña Cabriel are the three wines, with special selection, which develops in Spain Bodegas Palmera, remained at 90% of production dedicated for export. For varieties produced in Germany, the white, I have to emphasize his great Rieslling and above all a 'Burgunder' made from Pinot Grey, whose structure in the mouth makes it different from the typical targets of the area.
